Quirky Habits

This habit is more of a defensive mechanism but nonetheless it is pretty interesting: The Southern Giant Petrel is able to regurgitate a bad smelling oil.   When the Southern Giant Petrel feels threatened, it can spit this oil at the "threat" giving them the nickname "Stinker".

The Southern Giant Petrel gets most of it's food by scavenging.   They often feed near large fishing ships and scavvenge for discarded fish.   During the nesting period they will often set themselves near penguins and other bird colonies and "borrow" food from them.
